The Relationship between the Basmalah and al-Fatiha
Abstract
The Relationship between the Basmalah and al-Fatiha The Basmalah (In the name of God, All-Merciful, the All-Compassionate), has been one of the most widely debated issues in the science of exegesis. While commentators agree that the basmalah is a verse from the Qur'an, they are in disagreement on whether its appearance at the beginning of every chapter is an independent verse. Another issue of controversy among the commentators is whether the first Basmalah in the beginnig of al- Fatiha is a verse independent of all other basmalahs. In spite of this, the Basmalah at the beginning of Sura Fatiha has been given a number, indicating that it is a verse on its own. Taking into consideration its own unique features, the relationship between the Basmalah and the Opening Chapter (Al-Fatiha) has been considered in this study. To better understand the nature of the relationship between the two we first have adressed the science of Munasabah (The eligibility between verses and surah) and then examined into the nature of the relationship between the two in detail. It is concluded that the Opening Chapter can be considered as the expalanation of the Basmalah, as they are correlated with each other in terms of their repsective words and meanings
