St. Peter is Apostle of Jesus. St. Peters true and original name was Simon, sometimes occurring in the form Symeoa He was the son of J on a (Johannes) and was bom h Bethsaida, a town on Lake Genesareth.
Simon pursued in Capharnaum the profitable occupation of fisherman in Lake Genesareth, possessing his own boat.
According to the tradtion, after the Jesus, he had taken missionary joumies in some pbces. St. Peter laboured in Rome during the last period of hB ife, and there ended his earthly course by death. As to the duration of his Apostdic activity in the Roman capital, the continuity or otherwise of his residence there, the details and success of his labours, and the chronology of his arrival and death, all these questions are uncertain, and can be solved only on hypotheses more or less well-founded. The essential fact is that Peter ded at Rome: this constitutes the historical foundation of the dam of the Bishops of Rome to the Apostolic Primacy of Peter.
