Abstract

The sayyids that mean Prophet Muhammed’s family had dispersed at different times to all Islamic regions. The south-east of Anatolia is one of the important regions which contain sayyid population, too. At present we can see four sayyid groups in this region. The Becirman’s sayyids, the sheiks families, the tribes that consisted of sayyids and the Nakib’s family settling in Diyarbakır city center. We can see many influences of sayyids in the society of this region. "Zew" activity, moral brotherhood established between them and people, to swear by their names and to name children the famous sayyid’s names can be indicated as examples for this influence. As a result of charters (For example sayyid’s immunity from taxes and military service etc.) given to sayyids during the Islamic states history, many muteseyyids (people show them as sayyid simulatingly) have emerged. With the abolishment of niqabet foundation which had been established to protect sayyid’s rights and to prevent mutasayyids, the number of mutasayyids have been increased in Turkish Republic period. The urbanization and modernity constitute the very preventive factors against tasayyud phenemenon in this region.
