A View of al-Ibādāt al-Marsūma in the Light of the Verses from the Perspective of the Lunar and Gregoraian Calendars

Abstract

Man's contact with time began with his adventure on earth, and his contact with it continues to in-crease day by day. That's why every society has always been able to determine time and its unit of measurement. Therefore, understanding and expressing what time is has occupied an important place in its agenda. Because although they perceived time as a unit of measurement that determines the time between the beginning and end point of something, they could not decide on a definition they agreed on. Therefore, there have always been different approaches and definitions throughout the historical course. This has led each nation to develop a time determination system within its own understanding. For this reason, societies living in different parts of the world have endeavoured to establish time cri-teria to determine time according to themselves. Among these, those based on the movements of the sun, earth and moon have attracted more attention. Following this, depending on the movements of the sun, al-Shamsî (Gregorian); depending on the movements of the moon, lunar (Hijri) calendar stud-ies began to take shape. Over time, serious efforts were made on it, and it was finalized and accepted as an acceptable and legitimate calendar in the eyes of people. Since the celestial bodies and starting points accepted in the mentioned calendars are different, differences have occurred between them. This has led to the creation of different calendars. Following the efforts and studies made in this field, various calendars such as Şemsî (Gregorian), Kamerî (Hijri), Celâlî and Rumî began to become wide-spread. Some of these calendars have been used on a universal scale, while others have been used on a regional level. Lunar and Gregorian calendars, which have global acceptance, are among the most widely used in the world. In this context, it should not be overlooked how great blessing the moon and the sun are. Because the sun, its heat and light, and the moon have an important place among the ele-ments that make the world liveable by illuminating the dark nights with its light. In addition, it was possible to determine the time by taking advantage of the flow of these celestial bodies in their pre-scribed orbits. In this way, on the one hand, the past was kept count, and on the other hand, daily life and the future were planned. Within the framework of this understanding, we took the basis of the data of the Gregorian calendar, which accepts the birth of Jesus as the zero point, and the Lunar cal-endar, which takes the migration of Muhammad (pbuh) from Mecca to Medina as its starting point. Within the framework of these two calendars, we have endeavoured to help take a closer look at the universal harmony in the direction of making al-ibādāt al-māsūm registered in time in the light of verses with an understanding that takes into account the integrity of the Holy Qur'an. For this pur-pose, we wanted to make a study that systematically deals with the relationship between worship and calendars under main and sub-headings in the light of verses, taking into account the partial infor-mation interspersed in various subjects. We have taken care to do this through methods that are ap-propriate to the situation of the subject, especially induction and deduction. This study, which was conducted within the framework of literal and divine verses, draws attention to the wisdoms in the binding of al-ibādāt al-mersūma to a certain calendar. This situation is also emphasized in the result section in the light of the data obtained. As a result, this study aims to make a contribution to the field.
