Character Education: The Case of America
Abstract
After the industrial revolution in the West, while a rapid change was lived in the lives of
societies, many institutions were affected by this development negatively. In order to
eliminate these effects, many attempts have been made. One of the efforts to eliminate
these effects was the establishment of character education programs in educational curriculums.
Character education was raised in the nineteenth century as an inclusive concept
which promoted moral values, ethics and citizenship in educational contexts.
This article examines character education which has been discussed seriously since the
middle of the nineteenth century in the USA. Character education is elaborated under
four subtitles such as the definition and aims of character education, the historical development
of character education, the reasons for character education and the future of
character education based on the experience of the USA.
