The Semantic Change of The Meaning of ‘Musehharīn’ In the 153rd and 185th Verses of the Surah Shu‘Arā

Abstract

For the term musehharīn that is taking place in Shu‘arā 153 and 185, two meanings were given in tafsīr books. One of these is the word ‘bewitched’ that is known extensively present day. And the other meaning is ‘who needs eating and drinking’ i.e. ‘human’. This article will deal with the semantic change in the denotation of the term musehharīn. In this context these two meanings of the term musehharīn used in 153rd and 185th verses of the surah Shu‘arā will be examined. In conclusion we will try to discover which meaning is proper to the context of the verses
