Dreams and its Interpretation According to Muhyi al-Din al-Arab

Abstract

This paper studies the place of dreams in sufi thought based on Ibn al-Arabi’s views. In- terpreting dreams is an ancient method for understanding the human subconscious. Ibn al-Arabi approaches the subject matter from a al-maratib al-wujud perspective. In this context, the dream and its interpretation is studied with a semantic expansion. He ex- plains the subject matter as a sample of an experience which points at the place of the world within the al-Wujud. Starting out from the fact that dream is regarded as a part of al-nubuwwat, he studies the nature of the relation between dreams and al-nubuwwat. He explains that a special kind of dreams, called the al-mubashshirah, can become a means for saints to attain and discern the true meaning of revelations (al-wahy). And finally, he discusses dreams as an experience which describes the relationship between man and his existence in the world, providing explanations as to their place in the Sufi experience
