THE REASON-REVELATION RELATIONSHIP IN THE SYSTEM OF ALMATURIDIYYA AS A SHOOL OF ISLAMIC THEOLOGY

Year 2005, Volume: 5 Issue: 3, 233 - 246, 31.12.2005

Abstract

Mutezile comes to mind when ‘rationalism’ in the history of Islamic Theology is in
question. However, the method that put forward how to use the ration properly has
been produced by al-Maturidi and his fellows. Unfortunately, the works of al-Maturidi
have been started to be published in the beginning of twentieth.
The ration is both the source of knowledge and the power that separates one thing
from anothers in al-Maturidiyya. The ration is separated into two pieces as natural and
an acquired ration by Islamic theologists. The acquired ration is open to improvement
every time according to them.
Islamic Theology known as al-Maturidiyya founded a strong stability between the
reason and the revelation. In this connection, ration cannot live surely without revelation.
In the same way, revelation has not importance without reason. Because, the revelation
is understood by means of the reason. The revelation speaks to people who have
the ration. Consequently, transformations between the ration and the revelation according
to the nature of subject can be occurred for grasping the meaning of the religion
properly. For instance, the ration can be prime in some situations. On the other hand,
the revelation can be subordinated in other situations. But this can sometimes be full
reverse and it might be found the samples of this situation in the books on the Islamic
Theology.
