SAYYID QUTB’S WAY OF READING THE WEST
Abstract
The Western threat to the Muslim World is serious because the West tries to dominate
the world via modernism, military force, its own commerce-oriented culture, etc. The
ill-will generated by this senseless onslaught confronts with the reaction of Muslims. The
responses provoked by that visceral reaction cannot be understood without fully considering
the West’s image in the eye of Muslims. It is in this context that Sayyid Qutb’s reading
of the West –it can be seen as an occidental effort- should be regarded. In this study, we
will present the key concept of jahiliyyah (state of ignorance of the guidance from God)
and his approach to it. Then, we will examine his viewpoint on the Western thought system
and his advice for Muslims to offer a plausible response to it

Öz
İslâm dünyasına Batı’dan gelen ciddi bir tehdit söz konusudur. Çünkü Batı dünyası; modernizm, askerî güç ve kapitalist kültürü vb. unsurlarla İslâm dünyasına hükmetmeye çalışmaktadır. Bu çaba Müslümanların tepkisini çekmektedir ve Batı’daki İslâm karşıtı geleneğin anlaşılması söz konusu olmaksızın, İslâm dünyasındaki Batı’ya yönelik eleştirileri ve tutumları anlamak kolay olmayacaktır. Bu çalışmada, önce konuyu anlamamızda anahtar kavram olan cahiliyeyi ve Seyyid Kutub’un bu kavrama yaklaşımını ele alacağız. Ardından da onun Batı düşünce sistemine bakışını ve Batı’ya karşı alınması gereken tavrın ona göre ne olduğunu ortaya koymaya çalışacağız
