IS THE OCCIDENTALISM OF HANAFI AN IMPROVISATION NOT DESERVING CONTEMPLATION?

Abstract

Edward Said's critique of Western Orientalism. Hanafi’s mainly work on the issue (Muqaddima fi ilm al-Istighrab [Introduction to the science of Occidentalism]) dis- cusses relations between ‘Arabic Islamic culture/self’ and ‘West/other’ with all de- tails. Hanafi's project is to objectivate the Occident in the same way that Western- ers used to do it with the Orient with the purpose of recreating an independent Ar- abic-Islamic intellectual tradition. He says: The West has been the teacher and we the pupils as long as we consider the West just as a source of knowledge and not as an object of inquiry. Whereas for Arabs, Africans, Latin-Americans, Asians, His- tory has not ended. It has perhaps not even started. So, we must learn to place orientalists under the microscope and make them as an object of study
