THE EUROPE PERCEPTION OF OTTOMAN AMBASSADORS IN EIGHTEENTH CENTURY (THE HEAVEN OF INFIDELS
Abstract
The perception of the nations to each other and the interpretation of the
differences between them reveal many consequences concerning wide areas, including
from daily life to politics and from culture to diplomacy. In the eighteenth
century the perception Europe of Ottoman had changed because of Ottoman position
against the Europe. As a result of this a lot Ambassadors were sent to European
Countries to make some observations about developments that occurred in Europe.
The Ottoman Ambassadors wrote their impression of Europe in their reports
that are called sefaretname. The reports which the Ottoman ambassadors regularly
reported are important sources reflecting the Ottoman society’s Europe perception.
Sefaretnames reported the developments and life style in the Europe to the Ottoman
State. Finally, this article examines the Europe perception of Ottoman Ambassadors
in the eighteenth century.
