The Relationship Between Social Media Addiction and Academic Motivation and Academic Achievement in Imam Hatip High School Students

Abstract

With the rapid advancement of technology today, the use of devices such as computers, tablets, and smartphones has increased significantly, and this increase has led to the rapid spread of social media use, especially among young people. The use of social media began with Facebook and has developed over time to include various platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube, and WhatsApp. Individuals use social media platforms for various reasons such as communicating with family and other social circles, obtaining information and news, entertainment, playing games, and making personal posts. Although social media has positive aspects, its excessive and uncontrolled use of social media can negatively affect students’ academic motivation and academic achievement. It can also lead to depression, sleep disorders, family problems, unhealthy friendships, psychological and physiological problems. In this context, it is important to reveal the relationship between social media addiction among young people and academic motivation and achievement, to offer solutions, and to provide suggestions for parents, educators and other concerned parties. This study aims to examine the relationship between social media addiction and academic motivation and academic achievement among imam hatip high school students. To do so, it utilizes relational research model, one of the quantitative research methods. The population of the study consists of imam hatip high school students studying in Şanlıurfa. Representing this population, 718 students from different imam hatip high schools constitute the sample of the study. Before starting the research, ethical approval was obtained. As data collection tools,in addition to the personal information form, the “Social Media Addiction Scale for Adolescents” developed by Özgenel et al. (2019) and the “Academic Motivation Scale” developed by Bozanoğlu (2004), were used. The data obtained from the research were analyzed using SPSS 21.0 statistical software. Independent samples t-test, ANOVA test, and Pearson Correlation test were used for data analysis. The findings from the research show that excessive and uncontrolled use of social media is negatively associated with students’ levels of academic motivation and, consequently, their academic achievement. The research results show that as students’ social media usage time increases, their levels of social media addiction also increase. In addition, it was found that videos are more strongly associated with social media addiction than messaging. Short videos were found to be more strongly associated with social media addiction than longer videos. The research findings reveal that students with lower daily average social media usage times have higher tendencies in the sub-dimensions of academic motivation, such as self-transcendence, using knowledge, and exploration, compared to those with higher daily average social media usage times. Today, it is evident that young people’s addiction to social media tools is increasing, and it does not seem possible to completely remove these tools from their lives. In this case, ways to effectively and beneficially use social media tools, which have now become indispensable elements of life, should be sought. In this context, it is important to guide young people to use social media consciously rather than banning them altogether. In this regard, it is crucial for the Ministry of National Education, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Presidency of Religious Affairs, and other relevant public institutions and organizations, along with NGOs, to create and develop beneficial social media platforms, groups, and content that will contribute to young people’s knowledge and moral development, taking into account their interests and needs.
