HISTORY OF FRAUD: SCIENCE+POLITICS=ORIENTALISM —The letter of Imam Alizâde, the Cadi of Mosul—

Abstract

This article has been penned on the occasion of a document used in the first chapter, entitled “First Principles: Research and Report as Historian’s Work”, of the book, named The Modern Researcher, written by the two authors, Jacques Barzun-Henry F. Graff, published in 1957. This document mentions about the Turks’ lack of knowledge in statistics based on a letter written by a Turkish official to the British archeologist Layard. The above mentioned document, just as used in the same aim by Barzun and Graff -i.e., to prove how Muslims are backward in scientific mentality- was called for again, and for the same agenda nearly one hun- dred twenty years ago (in March 29, 1883), and presented as a conference paper by Ernest Renan at Sorbonne in front of an elect audience and published next day in Journal des Débats. In this paper, titled ““L’Islamisme et la Science”, Renan criticizes the attitude of Islam towards science and scientific endeavors; and announce to “the world” that Islam is an obstacle in the path of progress and evolution, impedes scientific developments, and leads its fellows backward and pitiful situation. This article aims both at shedding light on discussions over the aforementioned letter written by Imam Alizâde, the Cadi of Mosul, and at showing how meaning of a text is distorted through prejudicial readings via disjointing it from its context.
